A Never Ending Circle

Have you ever been in a situation, at any time in your life, as a small child, teenager or adult, where you have been trying to grab the attention of people around without a response?

You may have, as a child kept  asking your parents for something, telling them your dream and them not taking you seriously, and your dream was never fulfilled.

My Mother had a longing to go to school, like all the other children, she wanted to be educated so that she could become a nurse. Her parents didn't care though, and they denied her, her education and kept her at home to be a slave to them and her younger siblings (she was the eldest girl in a family with thirteen children) for much of the time. There was nothing she could do about it, as physical and mental abuse was common place. Her dream was denied her.

Can you imagine, or maybe you have been in a similar situation, the frustration and anger and hurt that you felt at the time?

If you have never experienced it, try to imagine it.

You want to do something, it's very important to you, you've researched it, you know you can do it, you know how to go about it, and, you know it will benefit others. BUT, and it is a big BUT, you can't do it alone, you need help to achieve it.

So, you tell you family and friends, you ask them what they think and you don't get the interest you hoped for.  Their half hearted response and lack of constructive advise, tells you that they don't believe that you are serious. But you are serious and you keep trying harder and harder to convince them.

This goes on for weeks, months or event years. You may collect  a few supporters along the way, but too few. At some point, you realise that you are ALMOST ON YOUR OWN.

I myself have been in a situation like this and it HURTS LIKE HELL.  I felt like I was screaming and nobody was listening. I am experiencing it, to a degree at this moment in time, on a very personal level. But I won't give up.

Why? You may ask, am I writing this.

I am writing this because it is how I imagine my friend Jan Cabral and her husband Carlos (Dogs in Brazil) are feeling at the moment. They have been crying out for help for months now with very little response from anyone and this is the reason.

They went to live in Brazil some years ago from the UK and, to cut a long, complicated  story short for this blog, became involved in rescuing sick and injured dogs found on the streets.

Jan and Carlos used their own money to fund it. It was difficult, but they managed, and, because the area that they live in is very beautiful, the tourist industry played an important role in funding it.

CHARITY STATUS

However, to get help in the form of medication, food, supplies, and to be able to campaign legally in Brazil, they knew that they needed to be a registered as a Non Profit Charity.   The necessary steps were taken to achieve this and the legal process began and proceeded almost up to completion.

Everything was in place when disaster struck with the floods, mud slides and devastation in January of this year (2011). Many hundreds of people died and many lost their homes. (There are numerous videos showing the Brazilian Floods on YouTube)

The tourist industry in their area died too. Many pets lost their lives, were injured and made homeless  and Jan's workload went up a gear.

Because of this they were  unable to fund the legal work to complete the statute for their charity. They were promised by someone, who seemed genuine, the funds they needed to complete the statute, as they had been through a similar situation and understood their need for this. But on the day that they promised to help with funds for completion, they severed all contact with Jan and Carlos and they have been unable to communicate with them since. THEY BROKE THEIR PROMISE.

Today, this is the no win situation they are in

1) The completion of  the Non Profit Charity Status must be completed. $3000  Only we can help fund this as their own money has run out and their sponsors broke their promise.

2) People aren't donating because they are not a registered charity.

3) They can't become registered unless people donate to allow them to complete.

4) Back to point 1, 2 & 3

IF WE GIVE SUPPORT AND DONATIONS then this never ending circle of non achievement can be broken. Dogs in Brazil will then be able to campaign legally for Medications, Food and Supplies. Companies and individuals will be more willing to help (just look at all the donations and help that other registered charities get).

Thank you for taking the time to read this. If you can, please donate. Even a very small amount will help. Lots of small amounts soon add up. And please share this with your friends EVERYWHERE.

TO DONATE  Please visit Dogs in Brazil

A detailed account written by Jan herself can be found here: North Country Gazette Article  It was written back in August of 2011 and much has changed since then but with no real progress, due to lack of support. The latest events can be found in Dogs in Brazil

Dogs in Brazil

I have just completed a Pet Portrait for a Lady in Brazil who runs a small NO KILL rescue for street dogs in Brazil. Jan has launched an urgent appeal She has no funds they have lost almost everything as a result of severe weather and floods where she lives. She has to re locate with zero funds plus move all of her rescued dogs with her. Please see her story here. http://janeiro-emmy.blogspot.com/.

If you can, please follow her on twitter, vote and donate. Even a small amount will help. It all adds up.

German Shepherd Painting
This portrait is of her first rescue, a German Shepherd called Harry. This is a short story of Harry as written by his mum Jan Cabral:

He was found by two friends of ours the morning after a huge shoot out between drug gangs and cops walking in the middle of dense traffic. Everybody was too afraid to go near him. He had mange and was very thin. Our friends new we wanted a German Shepherd dog and decided to approach him and try to get him out of the Copacabana traffic where he was at great risk of being run over. He came to our friend willingly and they put him in their car and took him home. They called us and we said we will have him. He arrived the next day. He was so thin I did not believe he was a German Shepherd and he was half bald with mange. He was also extremely stressed. His first day here he stole the BBQ meat for our guests. He settled down and turned into the best friend ever. He would defend us with his life. He never ever messed in the house. He had been trained by someone because he sat, gave his paw, laid down and attacked upon command. All these things we found out bit by bit. He was sensitive and caring. Beautiful by looks and nature. I so miss him. He died of a heart attack around two years ago. He must have been around 11 years of age. He just screamed and died instantly. He was running and healthy until that moment. Misty was his best friend and they loved each other dearly. He was the only dog here that she ever played with. I still remember the softness of his fur. Loved him so much.

PLEASE SHARE THIS WITH ALL OF YOUR FRIENDS.

New Art Work

I have just created some new artwork. I have uploaded them to Zazzle.  They can be seen on Cards, Gift Boxes, Bags and iPad cases. Take a look and leave a comment if you wish. Here is the artwork for you to see:

Pink Oriental Lily - A digital Coloured Pencil Drawing

I love Lilies and I often buy them when I am out shopping, to brighten up my lounge table.

I took the photo for this picture some time ago and decided a few days ago to have a play. This was the result. It is a combination of several special effects filters and blend modes.

White Floral Bouquet - A Texturised Digital Oil Painting
The photo for this painting was from a bouquet that I was given to me on my birthday. Every flower was perfect.

Again, several filters were used to achieve this effect. I then added a textured border using different brushes and layer effects.

Robin- Coloured Pencil Drawing

I took the photo of this little Robin when we had snow last year. He was sitting on the gate at the bottom of my garden. He, with all the other birds, was waiting his turn to feast on the treats I had put out.

I have created a Christmas card with this image.

I Need Your Input

If you have visited this blog before you know that I have a new Pet Portraits website that I have been building over the past few months. Over the past month, I have created a Breed Pet Portraits page which has links to Cat Breed PortraitsSmall Dog Breed Pet Portraits and Large Breed Dog Portraits.

Until now I have chosen the breeds of dog or cat to include in these pages.
Please could you help me out? I would like to include your choice of breed, or you may know someone else, who would like to join in.

Do you have a favourite breed of pet that you would like me to paint?
Do you have a story, happy, funny or sad, about your favourite breed?
If you have PLEASE SHARE IT. I am sure everyone would enjoy it.

If you have a photo of that  breed you can submit that too! It doesn't have to be a photo for me to paint, just one that you like.

If you can help me, there is the link to the page on my website at the end of this post, where you can send me your story.

It will have its own page on the website, and others will be able to comment there as well.

I will be over the moon if someone could set the ball rolling. Please don't be shy, none of your personal details will be shared with anyone.  It would be nice to have my readers input as well as my own.

Thank you everyone. I look forward to hearing from you all.

Here is the link. It's very easy to do. http://www.sarahspetportraits.com/breed-pet-portraits.html

English Rose - Summer Song

This English Rose is another flower that took days of waiting to photograph. It was one of only three flowers on the rose bush that had survived the bad weather.

There is very little post processing of the rose itself. I have just applied a textured background to add impact.

This  will be added to products on in my Zazzle store over the next few days.
Please take a look. Christmas is coming.

Iris Painting.

We have had a very wet and windy summer here in the UK and the flowers in my garden have paid the price.

It has been difficult too, to take photos of them because of the wind. Getting a sharp, in focus close up is difficult.

I tried to take a photo of this Iris when it was in its prime, but it was very windy and the images were only good enough for the rubbish bin!

Eventually though, I grabbed and opportunity when the wind had dropped and I was at home for the day. The Iris was past its best, but not too bad. Good enough for a painting.

Painted in Photoshop, using Pixel Bender, Alien Skins Snap Art along with some Photoshop blending modes and brushes.

I hope you like it. Thank you for looking.

New Website Update

I have been busy building my new website this week and have added several more pages.  It is not finished yet though.

The Pet Portrait galleries are not built yet but they will be added in the next week or so. I am going to add a page on How I paint - step by step screen shots of a painting from start to finish. I will probably add a Children's Page too.  I will invite children to send me a Pet Portrait that they have drawn of their own pet, along with a little story or information about it.

I may also ask for votes from those who send in their pet portraits, for their favourite one sent in by others. Then, at the end of the month, the Pet Portrait that wins will be displayed on my Home Page.

What do you think?
Any ideas you may have for my new site will be welcomed.

Please visit it, and, if you like it, please click on the Facebook or Twitter buttons at the bottom of each page, if you have a Facebook or Twitter account. so that all your friends can find it!

Thanks for your support.

New Website Info

Hi Everyone,

I have not been able to post recently. There are a lot of things going on here in West Compton. We have the West Compton Vintage Fayre next weekend. I have been busy making cakes, printing my floral pictures and other things for that.

Also, I have been building a New Website dedicated only to my Pet Portraits. It is not finished yet, I still have a lot of work to put in, and I'm usually working on that most evenings.

I have completed the Home Page, an About Me page where I give a brief insite into my life. Where I live, My hobbies and how I started painting Pet Portraits. There is a page too finished showing my own pet's paintings. These are important because they were the first pet portraits that I considered proper paintings!

Please have a look at my new website even though I still have a long way to go with it.

I will also be setting up a Facebook Page for my Pet Portraits and a Tweet account.

Please have a look at the website and follow my progress and please will you tell your friends about it.

If you want to contact me direct I have a email address for all of my artwork. I will be glad to hear from you.

My new website is:  Sarah's Pet Portraits

Two New Cat Portraits and Contact Page Added

I have added two cat Pet Portraits this week. I have been painting most evenings. It is lovely to sit  at the table painting on my computer, warm chocolatey drink to keep me going, pets all around me and husband snoring on the sofa. What a life!

I will be taking some more photographs of flowers in the next few days, especially the roses in my garden, most of which are English roses. Beautiful. So watch this space for some more Floral paintings.

Anyway, back to my Artwork. I know it's early days yet, but Christmas is not far away. Commission a Pet Portrait as a gift, either for yourself or a special person in your life. You won't be disappointed.

NO DEPOSIT REQUIRED
You pay when your painting is completed and you are happy with it. As soon as I receive your payment your painting will be dispatched.

From receiving your order to completion is approximately 2 weeks at the moment, depending on the amount of preparation required, but this will be longer as Christmas approaches. If you require a special delivery deadline I will do my best to help you.

For detailed instructions for HOW TO ORDER A PET PORTRAIT and tips for taking photos of your pet, please visit my website Pet Portraits by Sarah  The original photos of the paintings displayed on this blog are in the website too.

New Cat Painted Portrait Added

I have continued to be busy this week, trying to find the time to take more photographs for my Floral Art. It has been difficult though because it has been quite breezy. To take macro images it is better if there is little or no wind to capture a really sharp image. Nevertheless I have found the time to complete a new painted pet portrait - Black and White Cat - which I have uploaded today. . I hope you like it and the other paintings displayed on this site.. If you wish to commission a hand painted pet portrait, please visit my website  Pet Portraits by Sarah for ordering and contact information.

I really enjoy painting your pets, knowing that my clients are happy to receive an original hand painted portrait of the special pets in their lives.

Floral Artwork for Sale Added, Pet Portraits Updated

Floral Art for Sale
I have for the past week, been busy preparing the images for the digital paintings that I have for sale. Most of them are done now, although there are still a few outstanding.

I have been thinking a lot about the best way to sell these painting to those of you who would like to own one. I didn't know whether to have you order from me direct and print them myself, as I do my Pet Portraits, or to go with an online shop.

Eventually I decided to go down the online shop route, mainly due to the fact that you can choose from a wide variety of formats and there are many  different sizes to choose from. The prices are very affordable too.
There are also some photographs in my portfolio there which can be purchased as well.

Pet Portraits
Bertie, a Cocker Spaniel, has been added to the collection. He is so cute and his expression tells you exactly what he is like...full of mischief.

Well, I'm signing out now, there is still a lot more to come. Thank you for visiting my blog and please feel free to comment. Thank you

My New Blog

Well, this is my first blog. I have been busy this week out in the garden weeding, pruning and digging and planning my next step. I still haven't decided yet, and  there is still plenty to do. I must finish the pond edging, cut the grass, more weeding, rescue my lavender path damaged by the harsh winter....the list goes on!!

I have also been busy taking photographs so that I can create some beautiful ArtWork. This is what my blog will be focusing on. A place to show the world what I can do.  I will be displaying:

  • Pet Portraits - Digitally hand painted pet portraits
  • Wild Animal Portraits - again digitally hand painted. I'm off to take some photos to work on soon
  • Photo restoration - restore old or damaged photos so that you can fully appreciate the image captured perhaps many years ago.
  • Floral Prints - Created digitally using various techniques to produce unusual, textured composite prints which are available to purchase
  • Photograph Enhancements and edits - improving or creating a picture from an ordinary photograph.
Anyway, I'd best get on with creating some more pages.

PLEASE if you like my blog please click on the FACEBOOK SHARE button below
